At one of the largest mechanical engineering plants in the Urals, which produces more than 800 units of heavy tracked and wheeled machinery annually, commissioning work has been completed and a horizontal balancing machine with end drive BALTRON-1500L.E manufactured by ENSET. The customer plans to balance mulcher rotors and drums on the machine.
Why is balancing a mulcher rotor and drum critically important?
The mulcher rotor is one of the most heavily loaded rotating assemblies in all types of attachment equipment. It operates under constant impacts with soil, stones, stumps and timber at 1,500–2,500 rpm. The rotor of an excavator-mounted mulcher weighs hundreds of kilograms. At these speeds, even a microscopic change in mass at the periphery is instantly converted into a destructive centrifugal force. That is why choosing the right balancing equipment is an investment in the service life of every machine that leaves the production line.
BALTRON-1500L.E has an impressive operating range:
- Rotor length — 35 to 3,570 mm (between journal centres)
- Diameter — up to 1,800 mm
- Mass — 1 to 1,500 kg
- Rotational speed during balancing — 100 to 5,000 rpm
- Number of correction planes — 2
End Drive: Power and Control
BALTRON-1500L.E is equipped with an end drive with a drive spindle, providing 250 mm travel and pneumatic release for movement. The drive uses a universal joint shaft, ensuring stable torque transmission without radial loads on the workpiece. As a result, balancing introduces no additional disturbances and the result remains unaffected.
The drive servo motor, rated at 7.5 kW, provides automatic start and stop, while automatic indexing and holding of the workpiece minimise operator involvement in routine stages and improve result repeatability.
VIBROLAB-5.M Measuring System: Accuracy Confirmed by State Type Approval
At the heart of the machine is the VIBROLAB-5.M measuring system, a type-approved measuring instrument (Registration No. 97688-26). Its key parameter is the minimum achievable residual specific unbalance emar = 0.03 g·mm/kg. To put this into perspective, for a 100 kg rotor this accuracy corresponds to an unbalance of no more than 3 g·mm — a value well below the detection threshold of traditional inspection methods for most industrial applications.
Another advantage is the extended verification interval of up to 3 years. The extended verification interval reduces the frequency of verification procedures and the associated administrative costs and downtime.
Installing BALTRON-1500L.E enables the plant to:
- Monitor and ensure residual unbalance in accordance with the requirements of process documentation and applicable standards.
- Reduce quality variation — automation of the drive and measuring system makes the result independent of the operator’s skill level and mood
- Expand the range of workpieces that can be balanced without purchasing additional machines — thanks to the broad mass, length and diameter ranges
- Reduce operating costs for measuring equipment maintenance thanks to the three-year verification interval
Why are balancing machine quality and reliability not a matter of convenience, but a matter of results? Balancing a mulcher rotor is not a cosmetic procedure, but the only way to break the chain reaction “unbalance → vibration → failure”. A balancing machine is a tool whose accuracy and reliability directly determine whether a mulcher will run for a full season or be down for repairs after a week.
ENSET Expertise
Supply and commissioning were carried out by ENSET — a manufacturer of balancing equipment and measuring systems whose solutions have proven themselves at mechanical engineering, power generation and oil & gas companies. ENSET does more than supply the machine: it provides process support, configuration for the customer’s specific range of workpieces and personnel training, all of which are critical to bringing the equipment up to its design output quickly.
The commissioning of BALTRON-1500L.E is more than a local event in a single workshop. It forms part of a systematic approach to quality, under which every rotor is balanced on equipment capable of detecting and correcting unbalance at a level beyond the reach of most comparable machines. As a result, every machine leaving the plant carries an additional, invisible but critically important margin of strength.
