ENSET Commissions RAPID-20 Overspeed Test and Balancing Rig at a Power Engineering Enterprise in St. Petersburg

At a St. Petersburg enterprise with over 25 years of experience in power engineering, engineers from ENSET (Rostov-on-Don) have completed the commissioning of the in-house developed RAPID-20 overspeed test and balancing rig equipped with a vacuum chamber. The equipment is designed for production quality control, testing, and dynamic balancing of critical parts — centrifugal compressor impellers, turbine discs, and other disc-type rotors weighing up to 20 kg.

The rig combines two technological operations within a single system: overspeed testing and high-precision balancing. During overspeed tests, the workpiece is spun up to high rotational speeds ranging from 6,000 to 50,000 rpm. This generates elevated centrifugal loads, making it possible to verify the structural safety margin of the parts and detect hidden material defects prior to commissioning. Balancing is performed in a speed range of 400 to 5,000 rpm, enabling accurate determination and correction of unbalance to minimise vibration during the overspeed test and in the assembled unit. The rig's vacuum chamber eliminates aerodynamic drag, air-friction heating of the part, and parasitic air turbulence, ensuring high accuracy and repeatability of results.

ENSET manufactures the RAPID rigs in serial production: the range is designed for rotors weighing up to 2500 kg and meets the needs of prototype, small-batch, and high-volume manufacturing alike. Key technical advantages of the equipment include:

  • High measuring accuracy. The measuring system detects minimal residual unbalance, which is critical for high-speed rotating machinery where even the slightest centre-of-mass offset leads to vibration and accelerated wear of assemblies.

  • Two-in-one operation. Operating at both low speeds for balancing and ultra-high speeds for overspeed testing makes the rig a versatile tool for final quality control.

  • Vacuum chamber with an innovative sealing system. Deep vacuum inside the chamber eliminates the influence of aerodynamic forces, reduces the required drive motor power, and allows tests to be carried out under strictly controlled conditions.

  • Precision spindle. Radial and axial runout is less than 1 µm with a 10-fold safety factor for axial and radial loads, guaranteeing rotational stability across the entire speed range.

  • Rapid changeover. The design of the balancing adapters, mandrels, arbors and tooling, together with dedicated software, makes it possible to quickly adapt the rig to various sizes of compressor impellers and turbine discs.

  • Maximum industrial safety. The spin pit chamber serves as an ISO 21940-23 Class D protective enclosure — the highest protection class, ensuring full containment of fragments inside the chamber in the event of a complete rotor burst — and features an automatic safety interlock that prevents opening until rotation comes to a complete stop.

  • Reliability and service life. The equipment is engineered for intensive industrial operation and is rated for a 20-year service life.

Commissioning the RAPID-20 rig at the customer's facility in St. Petersburg addresses several production objectives at once:

  • Complete in-house testing cycle. The customer performs both overspeed testing and balancing independently without outsourcing workpieces to external test centres. This shortens the production cycle, eliminates logistics costs, and ensures full control over quality.

  • Accelerated R&D and design validation. When introducing new workpieces into production, the rig serves as an in-house research facility: engineers can promptly verify calculated parameters, refine part geometry, and confirm structural strength prior to serial manufacturing.

  • Documented quality assurance for clients. Automatically generated overspeed test reports and balancing data reports serve as official proof of assembly reliability, streamlining external audits and customer acceptance.

As part of the project, ENSET specialists carried out commissioning and trained the enterprise's personnel in testing procedures, operating mode setup, and data interpretation. The final stage comprised acceptance tests on an actual customer workpiece, which fully confirmed the specifications stated in the machine certificate and the rig's readiness for routine operation.

The warranty for the rig, including all its assemblies and components, is 5 years. Technical support and maintenance service are provided by the manufacturer throughout the entire 20-year service life of the equipment.
